For families

Supporting someone you love, without taking over.

For parents, partners, siblings, and friends. You care deeply, and you want to help in the right way. Here's how to be supportive while respecting their choices.

Starting the conversation

Choose a calm, private moment. Lead with care rather than conclusions, and ask what they've already learned or considered. Share information rather than ultimatums, and be ready to listen more than you speak. It's okay if the first conversation doesn't lead to a decision.

Respecting adult autonomy and consent

The traveler must be a consenting adult who chooses to participate — including completing the facility's screening directly. IBO CLEAR cannot arrange travel for someone who has not agreed to it. You can start the conversation with us on their behalf, and we'll help you understand the process so you can share it with them.

What a companion can and can't do

Each facility sets its own policies. Some welcome companions on site during parts of the program; others ask companions to stay nearby. Companions generally cannot be present for clinical procedures or make medical decisions for an adult traveler. We'll confirm the facility's policy in writing before you book.

Companion lodging and travel

We coordinate companion flights, the private airport transfer, and nearby lodging when the facility does not host companions — with quiet, comfortable options close enough to be present when visits are permitted.

Staying in touch

Before departure, we help you agree on a communication plan: how and when updates will be shared, who the facility's family contact is, and what the traveler has consented to share. Facilities control their own communication policies during the program.

Preparing the home for return

A calm, predictable environment can help. Consider rest time, simple meals, and reduced obligations for the first days. Talk together about what support will feel helpful rather than assuming.

Finding independent aftercare

Aftercare is provided by independent licensed professionals and community resources — not by IBO CLEAR. We can help schedule appointments the traveler chooses, ideally arranged before departure so there's a plan in place on return.

Taking care of yourself

Support for the supporter matters, too.

Watching someone you love face a difficult decision is hard. Consider finding your own support through a counselor, peer group, or trusted friend.
  • You don't need to have all the answers before reaching out.
  • It's okay to set boundaries around what you can and can't do.
  • Your role is support — medical decisions belong to the traveler and the facility's clinicians.

Reaching out for someone else?

A concierge can walk you through the process so you can share clear, calm information with your loved one.
